TY175: Paint

So, here's some pics of the tank, headlight bowl and exhaust guard at the painters. I sent the decals (from eBay) to the painter too. So, he painted, applied the decals and lacquered the whole lot. I believe the paint used was Yamaha Clean White. Very nice job.

 

 

And here I've rebuilt the petcock with all genuine NOS gaskets, etc, and added a brand new filler cap, cork washer and breather tube, and NIS rubber mounting damper. The exhaust guard is also mounted with NOS genuine Yamaha fibre anti vibration washers and NOS Yamaha screws.

TY175 - Exhaust Update

Since my last post on the exhaust I bought a Soda Blaster from Millar Soda Blasting and what a great bit of kit that is. The media is expensive (particularly when you add P&P), but it works a treat. I blasted the main part and the tail pipe, and sprayed them with Hycote Barbeque Paint. I've had the exhaust guard painted, and with a genuine Yamaha fitting kit, these is the Before & After results:

TY175: Todays Progress

I realised that I'd not removed the old swing arm spindle and bushes before I sent the arm off for painting. So, with trepidation, I removed the old bushes, cleaned up the spindle and put new bushes in, along with new shim washers, grease nipple and dust caps. I then fitted the arm.

I bought a cheap pair of shocks from eBay that look just about correct, but probably don't perforn brilliantly. But, as I don't intend to ride this bike much, I'd rather it looked the part.

I went on to loosley mount the foot pegs. I had some pattern foot peg springs that I used, but, they don't sit perfectly. I'll need to see if I can get NOS springs, that hopefully fit better. That can wait for now though. I also fitted the stand, with NOS genuine spring, nut and bolt.

All threads have copaslip on them. I sat the seat loosely in place too.

This is satisfying!

TY175: Frame Back From Painters

A defining moment in any restoration, I got my frame and bits back, RD Cox in Reading did a fantastic job. £115 all in - blasted and painted.

Oh, and I couldn't resist - 1st part fitted - the coil.

TY175: Wheels and Hubs

I've removed the spokes from the pair of rear wheels to get one good rim and hub. I'm ready now to send both rims and hubs off to get aqua blasted, and then, probably, to get painted. I spent time fettling the rims to remove the worst of the dings and scratches. I'll see when they're cleaned up, if I need to fettle the rims any more, and also decide on either paint or natural finish.

TY175: Frame off for Painting

I left the frame, and ancilliaries, with RD Cox & Son in Reading this afternoon. Two to three weeks and it will hopefully be ready. They will be painting, rather than powder coating it.
It's good to hear that some industries are busy!

Debate: Powder Coat or Two Pack Paint??

OK, one of the great debates seems to be whether frames should be two pack painted or powder coated.
Today I'm minded to go the paint route. But I may change my mind by the time it gets to the finishers.
I've added a poll on the right hand side here, so, just click your preference.There's no caveats, it's just your opinion, based on whatever your thoughts are on your bike / my bike / new or old / show or to use / factory finish or not, etc.
For your info, I don't intend to ride mine in competition. I'll run it around the local streets, and occasionally in fields (probably when it's dry!).
